It is based on strong self-trapping effects in mixed manganites, but this self-trapping is rather connected with larger defect trap states, not just with trapped electrons or holes. Due to a peculiar electrical field induced feedback, this self-trapping does not occur at random, but rather tends to build up space charge accumulation layers which are not at equilibrium with the matrix free carriers.
