Abstract

The neotropical liverwort genera Amphilejeunea R.M. Schust. and Cryptogynolejeunea R.M. Schust. are synonymized with Lejeunea Lib., because of the absence of differentiating morphological characters. Amphilejeunea patellifera (Spruce) R.M.Schust., A. viridissima R.M.Schust., Hygrolejeunea herzogii Steph., Eidejeunea spindleri Steph. and Brachiolejeunea cordistipula Steph. are reduced to synonyms of Lejeunea catinulifera Spruce. Cryptogynolejeunea reflexistipula (Lehm. & Lindenb.) R.M.Schust. is considered to be Lejeunea reflexistipula (Lehm.. & Lindenb.) Gottsche, Lindenb. & Nees and Cryptogynolejeunea costaricensis (Steph.) R.M.Schust. is proposed as a variety of the latter, namely L. reflexistipula var. costaricensis (Steph.) E. Reiner comb. now., as both species differ only in stein anatomy. Complete descriptions and illustrations of Lejeunea catinulifera and L. reflexistipula, with comments on the ecology, geographical distribution and variability of many morphological characters, as well as a key to the varieties of L. n flexistipula, are provided.
