Abstract

Chlorococcalean algae exhibiting globular cells and having spiny projections on their cell walls are currently classified within the family Micractiniaceae and Golenkiniaceae. We studied the phylogenetic relationships of Golenkinia to other spine-bearing chlorococcal algae using a phylogenetic analysis of molecular marker gene sequences. The 18S rRNA gene sequences of three strains of Golenkinia (Golenkiniaceae) and one strain of Micractinium (Micractiniaceae), were determined and subjected to a phylogenetic analysis algorithm. This phylogenetic analysis indicated that the Golenkiniaceae represent an independent lineage at the basis of the Chlamydomonadales (Chlorophyceae). This observation does not support previous classifications in which, Golenkinia is grouped together with Polyedriopsis (Sphaeropleales). The genus Micractinium is paraphyletic and is closely related to Chlorella (Trebouxiophyceae).
