Abstract

The budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been extensively studied as a model organism for biochemical and genetic research for almost a century. In recent years, yeast has been successfully used to model many aspects of human diseases. These "humanized" yeast models have had a profound influence on our understanding of the molecular events underlying neurodegenerative disorders. Yeast models can recapitulate important molecular events that occur in neurodegeneration, and provide clues about the underpinnings of toxicity in animal models of disease. Moreover, yeast models have also served as a powerful tool for drug discovery. In this mini-review, we describe yeast models that have been used to study the molecular aspects of Parkinson's disease pathology and recent advances in the field based on these models.
