This working paper discusses the use and importance of various certification systems for the field of modern research infrastructures. For infrastructures such as CLARIAH-DE, reliable storage, management and dissemination of research data is an essential task. The certification of various areas, such as the technical architecture used, the work processes used or the qualification level of the staff, is an established procedure to ensure compliance with a variety of standards and quality criteria and to demonstrate the quality and reliability of an infrastructure to researchers, funders and comparable consortia. The working paper conducts this discussion based on an overview of selected certification systems that are of particular importance for CLARIAH-DE, but also for other research infrastructures. In addition to formalised certifications, the paper also addresses the areas of software-specific and self-assessment-based procedures and the different roles of the actors involved.

This is the third of three reports composing the technology watch of CLARIAH-DE. The aim of all three reports is to give an overview of technological developments relevant to the project and its partners, and to offer recommendations concerning their adaptation within CLARIAH-DE. The first technology watch report discussed digital repository solutions from the perspective of research infrastructures. Simultaneously, an evaluation of current PID solutions was published. The second technology watch report, published as DARIAH-DE Working Paper, discussed certification schemes from the perspective of a humanities research infrastructure. The current report maps the relations of CLARIAH-DE with the European research infrastructure level and takes a more strategic and governance-related perspective, as compared to the other reports. It aims at aggregating an overview of the most relevant projects and initiatives CLARIAH-DE has to be aware of, connects to, or cooperates with for the sake of providing support to its users, i.e. researchers affiliated with the humanities. For the sake of clarity, we decided to arrange the format in a table. The matrix does not claim completeness but covers the most relevant European initiatives for CLARIAH-DE from the perspective of Work Package 4, which is devoted to the technical integration. The matrix reflects the state of March 2021. The authors have selected those aspects they considered relevant or where synergies and integration benefits seemed to be most obvious.

CLARIAH-DE combines services and offerings of CLARIN-D and DARIAH-DE. This includes various search applications which are made directly available to researchers. These search applications are presented in this working paper based on their main characteristics and compared with a focus on possible harmonizations. Opportunities and risks of different forms of technical integration are highlighted. Identified challenges can be explained in particular considering the background of different organizational and technical frameworks as well as highly specific and discipline-dependent requirements. The integration work that has already been carried out and the experiences gained with regard to future work and possible integration of further applications are also discussed. The experiences made in CLARIAH-DE can especially be of interest for other projects in the field of digital research infrastructures.
